August 2012

The NFL preseason doesn’t mean much in the overall scheme of things for football bettors. Outside of injuries and quarterback depth charts, the tune-up games are often skipped over when pigskin fans start sizing up the NFL odds.

The preseason did, however, impact some teams’ odds to win the Super Bowl. Here’s a look at five teams who watched their NFL futures rise and fall following the exhibition slate:

Miami Dolphins +6,000 to win Super Bowl

The Dolphins’ Super Bowl odds fell as low as 10-1 during the Peyton Manning free-agent frenzy. Miami was the odds on favorite to land the veteran quarterback and bettors jumped all over the Fins trying to grab value while they could. But, as well all know, Manning went to the Broncos and Miami was left to pick from a rookie QB Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore under center.

“So much of that early money was based on speculation, Jay Rood, sportsbook director at the MGM Mirage. “Everyone thought that was where (Manning) was going to go.

New York Jets +1,500

Books are being very cautious with the Jets, having moved them up only slightly from 12-1 to their current price. New York looked lost in the preseason schedule, going 0-4 SU and ATS and mustering only 31 total points through those games. Rood says he doesn’t want to go crazy with the Jets’ futures in case they get off to a hot start in the regular season.

Tennessee Titans +3,000

The Titans have been a roller-coaster ride for NFL futures bettors this preseason. Tennessee entered the exhibition schedule at 80-1 to win the Super Bowl thanks to a QB controversy between veteran Matt Hasselbeck and youngster Jake Locker. After announcing Locker as the No. 1 guy, the Titans offense looked good in the preseason contests and drew the admiration of bettors, moving to 60-1 and then to 30-1.

Seattle Seahawks +3,000

The Seahawks are another team putting their faith in a young QB this season. Seattle named rookie Russell Wilson as its Week 1 starter, beating out Matt Flynn and the departed Tarvaris Jackson. The Seahawks went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS in the preseason and moved from 50-1 to 30-1 heading into Week 1’s tilt with Arizona.

Arizona Cardinals +9,000

Speaking of the Cardinals, Arizona was perhaps the worst-looking side during the preseason. The Cardinals entered the exhibition season hoping to iron out their QB battle between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton. However, neither QB played well and bettors took notice, not only fading Arizona in Week 1 but ignoring them in the futures market. The Cards entered the preseason as low as 40-1 and was quickly adjusted to their current odds.

Washington Redskins +4,000

Washington was other team involved in the Manning sweepstakes, with speculation forcing oddsmakers to dip their Super Bowl futures all the way down to 15-1. Once Manning was out of the picture, and rookie Robert Griffin III was locked in as the No. 1 QB, the odds climbed to 40-1. Washington opened the 2012 futures at 150-1.

“I would imagine, as good as RG3 can be, it’s asking a lot for Washington to be a top-tier team, says Rood. “Just look at (Cam) Newton last year. He put up video game numbers but a first-year QB is only as good as all the other aspects of the team. This number will continue to come down.

B.C. Lions at Montreal Alouettes (+2, 52.5)

The rest of the CFL needs to stand and take notice. The Alouettes are gaining traction after a slippery start to the CFL season, winning three straight including a 31-29 victory over Hamilton last week.

Montreal kicker Sean Whyte booted a go-ahead field goal with nine seconds remaining to give the Als some momentum heading into this huge East-vs.-West showdown.

The Lions come into Friday with a ton of steam as well, having won four in a row after knocking off Winnipeg, 20-17, with a last-second field of their own. Paul McCallum split the uprights with just one tick remaining on the clock to edge the Bombers last Friday.

Week 10’s premier contest pits the Als’ potent pass attack of QB Anthony Calvillo and blossoming WR S.J. Green against B.C.’s stingy defense, which is allowing just 227.1 passing yards per game – tops in the CFL.

The last time these two giants collided, the Lions embarrassed the Alouettes 43-1 and limited Calvillo to just 9-for-17 passing and 63 yards, sacking the veteran pivot four times on November 5, 2011. British Columbia is going with a similar game plan Friday, knowing the best way to beat Montreal is to get to the Als’ star passer early and often.

The Lions have dominated this matchup in recent years – at least from a betting standpoint. British Columbia is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 trips to Montreal and boasts a 21-6 ATS mark in their last 27 head-to-head meetings.

Atlanta Falcons at Jacksonville Jaguars (-3, 38.5)

The Falcons will be kicking the tires on new backup QB Luke McCown, who was signed after the team released second-stringer Chris Redman. Atlanta also has some tinkering to do on the offensive line heading into the final preseason game.

New York Jets at Philadelphia Eagles (-5, 36.5)

The Jets have dominated this Week 4 preseason matchup, going 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS versus the Eagles in the preseason finale since 2001. New York will not play many of its starters and will also give No. 2 QB Tim Tebow the night off.

Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans (-3.5, 38)

Two QBs are out to impress in the last preseason tilt of the summer. Rookie passer Case Keenum is trying to secure a spot as the Texans third stringer and will be battling John Beck for that position Thursday. Vikings veteran Sage Rosenfels is fighting off McLeod Bethel-Thompson for the third-string job in Minny.

Buffalo Bills at Detroit Lions (-3.5, 38.5)

Detroit is expected to let its healthy starters play in Week 4, according to head coach Jim Schwartz. “If guys are healthy they’ll play,â€ he told reporters. “We may have some situations where we hold guys out that are just healing up to be at 100 percent, but if guys are 100 percent and they’re healthy they’re going to play.â€

Kansas City Chiefs at Green Bay Packers (+1, 40.5)

Green Bay’s starters will get a few reps in during the final preseason tune-up. The Packers will give QB Aaron Rodgers a series or two before focusing on position battles. The Chiefs, on the other hand, could give their first teams significant time Thursday after a lackluster preseason.

New Orleans Saints at Tennessee Titans (-3.5, 40)

The Saints were forced to leave for Tennessee early due to Hurricane Isaac and won’t be focused on football with plenty of family members evacuating New Orleans this week. The Saints are 6-10 SU and ATS in Week 4 of the preseason since 1995.

Cincinnati Bengals at Indianapolis Colts (-2.5, 38.5)

First-overall draft pick Andrew Luck will see action in Week 4 but it hasn’t been decided just how much. The Colts offense needs the reps before the regular season begins but they’re cautious of potential injuries to their key players.

Carolina Panthers at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3.5, 38.5)

Pittsburgh has one of the best records during Week 4 of the preseason since 1995, going 10-6 SU and 11-5 ATS. Carolina will likely give backup QB Jimmy Clausen plenty of snaps as well as veteran Derek Anderson in an effort to sure up its second-string option.

Baltimore Ravens at St. Louis Rams (-4.5, 38.5)

St. Louis has a short week to prepare for the final preseason contests, having played Saturday. New head coach Jeff Fisher told reporters he plans to play his starters more than most teams in Week 4, as far as into the third quarter. Baltimore isn’t expected to return the favor and will likely sit QB Joe Flacco and the rest of the first teamers.

Chicago Bears at Cleveland Browns (-3.5, 37)

Cleveland will sit rookie QB Brandon Weeden for the preseason finale with the Bears and instead start Colt McCoy. Browns head coach Pat Shurmur says backups Seneca Wallace and Thad Lewis will also get reps while the majority of the starters will rest.

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks (-6.5, 40)

Seattle backup QB Matt Flynn was limited in practice this week due to a sore elbow. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is optimistic about his status for Thursday’s game and will lean on third-stringer Josh Portis plenty if Flynn is unable to go. Running back Marshawn Lynch will not play in Week 4.

San Diego Chargers at San Francisco 49ers (-3, 38)

Chargers QB Philip Rivers will start Thursday’s preseason closer against the Niners. Rivers sat out Week 3 due to injuries on the offensive line and is expected to play more than most starting QBs in Week 4. Tight end Antonio Gates is also expected to play more than the usual Week 4 minutes.

Denver Broncos at Arizona Cardinals (-2.5, 36.5)

Denver will march backups Brock Osweiler and Caleb Hanie out under center in Week 4, sitting Peyton Manning for the preseason finale. Haine is expected to start but Osweiler has plenty of motivation in Arizona where he played his college ball at ASU. The Cardinals are still trying to tag a starting QB but will go with third-stringer Ryan Lindley as the starter Thursday.

Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has joined West Ham on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old England international had wanted to stay at Anfield but the realisation that he was out of manager Brendan Rodgers’s plans persuaded him to take a move.

The move reunites Carroll with his former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce and captain Kevin Nolan.

“It’s great to be here at West Ham and all signed up – I just can’t wait to get started now,” Carroll said.

Andy Carroll celebrates scoring against Blackburn

Carroll scores against Blackburn

“I want to be playing games and obviously hoping to score some goals. I know the manager well and some of the lads, so it is nice for me to come to a place where I know people.

“I’m hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. I know Sam from Newcastle and he was a massive reason for me coming. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great so it was a no-brainer really.”

Allardyce said: “I think for all parties this is a great signing. Andy is an all-round footballer, but because he is 6ft 3in and one of his strengths is his aerial power, everybody dismisses the ability he possesses on the floor.

“Hopefully he can score goals for us and we will be in a very good position at the end of the year in the Premier League.”

It is understood there is no commitment to buy the player, although the Hammers do have the option to complete a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee next summer.

However the deal could allow Liverpool to free up funds to move for Fulham striker Clint Dempsey.

Liverpool manager Rodgers said: “It is very simple – the club have made a monumental investment in big Andy. At the moment he is not playing. He made it very clear he wanted to play games and this is his last chance to do that.”

Having conceded defeat in their chase for Carroll earlier this month, West Ham were given signs of encouragement on Thursday.

Liverpool manager Rodgers is desperate to raise funds for new signings and made it clear Carroll was a “third choice” striker at Anfield.

He said: “You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see Andy has been a cover player for us and has been excellent in terms of his attitude and acceptance of where he is at.

“But I don’t think we are in a position to have £35m players as third-choice strikers, or wingers who are on £5m-£6m a year.”

Liverpool must raise funds to step up their interest in Dempsey, while Arsenal’s Theo Walcott also remains a target.

With

Charlie Adam expected to join Stoke City shortly

and Jay Spearing likely to leave on loan to either Bolton or Wolves, Liverpool may be able to make an offer for Dempsey in the next 24 hours.

Liverpool have completed the signing of 18-year-old striker Samed Yesil from Bayer Leverkusen. The fee for the German Under-18 international is understood to be in the region of £1m.

Premier League holders Manchester City will play nine-times European champions Real Madrid in their opening game of the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini’s team will also face Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Champions League holders Chelsea begin their defence against Serie A champions Juventus, while Celtic have been drawn with Barcelona in Group G.

Manchester United face Galatasaray, Braga and FC Cluj while Arsenal have Schalke, Olympiakos and Montpellier.

Chelsea, who beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the final last season, also come up against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and Denmark’s FC Nordsjaelland, who they face at Stamford Bridge in their last game.

As well as Barcelona, Celtic face trips to Benfica and Spartak Moscow but all eyes will be on their two games against the 2011 Champions League winners.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men open their campaign at home to Turkish giants Galatasaray, before rounding off the group stages at Old Trafford against Romanian side CFR Cluj.

All of the teams lining up against Manchester City, who play Borussia Dortmund in their final game, are national champions of their respective leagues. City’s task was made harder because their Uefa co-efficient – determined by their recent record in European competition – is not as high as their English rivals.

Their clash with Real Madrid means former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will enjoy another return to England, while Arsenal come up against Montpellier, former employers of new Gunners striker Olivier Giroud.

What Manchester City players said on Twitter

“Looks like we’re not going to get any easy games again this year but it is certainly a good group for the fans. I’m looking forward already!”

Captain Vincent Kompany

“Group D highlights the fact why it’s called Champions league. #TitleWinnersOnly”

Defender Joleon Lescott

“What a group Real Madrid, Ajax and Dortmund so excited to play those big games.”

Midfielder Samir Nasri

“Very motivated to play the Champions. And even more in @MCFC’s group. Big rivals for a great competition.”

Striker Sergio Aguero

Arsene Wenger’s side travel to France in their first game, and finish with a trip to Greece to face Olympiakos.

Former Real Madrid forward Emilio Butragueno said that although his team and City might be viewed as favourites to qualify for the knockout stages, every game would be challenging.

“From a spectator point of view this group is very attractive and we will watch great matches and players with great prestige,” he said. “But it will be tough and it will be like a final each time so we have to be prepared.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said the draw with Barcelona would be a test for his team, but would add a touch of “real glamour” to their European campaign.

“We are familiar with the three teams, and have recent history with all three under [former manager] Gordon Strachan,” Lennon said. “It’s a tough, tough group but all the teams play good football, so they will be attractive games to watch.”

The group stages run from 18 and 19 September through to 4 and 5 December.

Meanwhile, Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has been named Uefa’s Best Player in Europe for last season, beating competition from team-mate Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spaniard was also named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2012.

Champions League groups:

Group A:

Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Paris St Germain, Dinamo Zagreb

Group B:

Arsenal, Schalke, Olympiakos, Montpellier

Group C:

Group D:

Group E:

Manchester City are aiming to complete the signing of Inter Milan defender Maicon and Benfica’s Javi Garcia before the transfer deadline.

Brazil’s Maicon, 31, is available for around £5m and boss Roberto Mancini wants him as cover for Pablo Zabaleta.

The £24m-rated Garcia has become a possible new target after Mancini’s main midfield target, Daniele de Rossi, decided to stay at Roma.

Fiorentina defender Matija Nastasic is also set to sign for City on Friday.

The Serbian teenager will cost the Premier League champions around £12m – with Stefan Savic going in the opposite direction to Italy. Swansea’s Scott Sinclair should also confirm a £6.2m deal with City on Friday.

Mancini insisted City faced a busy five days in the market after the 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Sunday and they have responded as the deadline approaches.

City signed Everton’s Jack Rodwell in a £12m deal but decided against pursuing deals for Robin van Persie, who went to Manchester United for £24m, and Eden Hazard, the Belgium international secured by Chelsea in a £32m deal.

Javi Martinez was another player of great interest to Mancini but he has moved to Bayern Munich from Athletic Bilbao in a £30m-plus transfer as City refused to be drawn into a host of what the club regarded as over-priced deals.

City’s Netherlands midfield man Nigel de Jong is also being linked with a move to AC Milan.

Mancini is still exploring his options, which leaves 25-year-old Garcia as a possible signing on Friday.

Liverpool will face their former assistant manager Steve Clarke again as they kick off their Capital One Cup defence with a trip to West Brom.

Clarke, who was Kenny Dalglish’s assistant at Anfield before both men were sacked in the summer, took charge at The Hawthorns in June.

He led Albion to a 3-0 Premier League win over Liverpool on the opening day.

Manchester United host Newcastle, neighbours City are at home to Aston Villa and Chelsea face Wolves.

Tottenham, still looking for their first win under new manager Andre Villas-Boas, face an awkward trip to League One Carlisle, who put out Championship side Ipswich in the last round.

Other intriguing ties see Everton, winners of their opening three league and cup games, visit Neil Warnock’s Leeds, and Sunderland travel to League One side MK Dons, conquerors of Blackburn in round two.

Paolo di Canio’s Swindon, who caused an upset by knocking out Premier League Stoke in the last round, have been handed a home tie against Championship side Burnley.

Crawley will be at home to Swansea and Arsenal host Coventry, while QPR face Reading in an all-Premier League match-up.

The ties will be played on the week commencing 24 September.

Capital One Cup third round draw:

Man Utd v Newcastle

Man City v Aston Villa

MK Dons v Sunderland

West Brom v Liverpool

Crawley v Swansea

QPR v Reading

Norwich v Doncaster

Bradford v Burton

Preston v Middlesbrough

Arsenal v Coventry

Southampton v Sheff Wed

Chelsea v Wolves

Carlisle v Tottenham

Swindon v Burnley

West Ham v Wigan

Leeds v Everton
